Some formal properties of phonological redundancy rules

چکیده
Redundancy in this theory means that the specification (either + or -) of certain features of a phoneme is predictable given the specifications of certain other features of the same phoneme and/or of neighbouring phonemes of a phoneme sequence. These restrictions on feature specifications are usually expressed by "redundancy rules". E.g. in English all nasal phonemes voiced which is expressed by a rule ~+nasal] --~ are ~voice~, to be read as "each phoneme which is specified ~nasaq must also be specified E+voice~ ". Among the redundancy rules usually two main types are distinguishech Those like the one just mentioned which express a restriction valid for each phoneme of a language, independent of possible neighbouring phonemes, will be called "phoneme-structure rules" (P-rules) in this paper. Besides them, there are rules expressing restrictions on the admissible phoneme sequences of the language, e.g. English no ~+consonanta~ segment can follow a in morpheme-initial nasal; they will be called (as usual) "morpheme-structure rules" (M-rules). In the paper of STANLEY ~2] the former are called segment structure rules and the latter sequence structure rules. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the properties of phonoiogical redundancy rules on a mathe-

Russian Loanword Adaptation in Persian; Optimal Approach
In this paper we analyzed some of the phonological rules of Russian loanword adaptation in Persian, on the view of Optimal Theory (OT) (Prince and Smolensky, 1993, 2003). It is the first study of phonological process on Russian loanwords adaptation in Persian. By gathering about 50 current Russian loanwords, we selected some of them to analyze. We found out that vowel insertion, vowel prothesis...
متن کاملA Formal and Computational Properties of the Confidence Boost of Association Rules
Some existing notions of redundancy among association rules allow for a logical-style characterization and lead to irredundant bases of absolutely minimum size. We push the intuition of redundancy further, to find an intuitive notion of novelty of an association rule, with respect to other rules. Namely: an irredundant rule is so because its confidence is higher than what the rest of the rules ...
متن کاملExplaining Branchingness Effects in Phrasal Phonology
A wide variety of languages have been shown to have phonological rules whose domains of application are larger than words but smaller than intonational phrases or utterances. Within the theory of prosodic phonology, such rules correspond to the level of the Phonological Phrase, and for convenience I will use the cover term phrasal rules for them. However, the goal of this paper is to show that ...
متن کاملProbabilistic Ranking
This paper discusses aspects of ordering, more specifically probabilistic ordering. An algorithm is presented for adaptive learning an optimal ordering based on data, such that the resulting ordering follows the statistical properties in the input data. The properties to be ordered can be phonological rewrite rules, pronunciation rules inferred from observed phonetic data, grammar rules, etc. T...
متن کاملThe Phonetic Grounding of Phonology
Phonological theory makes claims about the entities of phonological representation (such as features, phonemes, or syllables); about the constraints or rules which describe the well-formed combinations of these entities; and about the way in which constraints or rules interact to determine the space of well-formed abstract representations. Work on the phonetic grounding of phonology has eroded ...
